Supplies Needed to Make a Fork Painted Lion

Crating this craft only requires a few simple materials. You most likely have everything you need lying around the house already. Before you head to the craft store, check your drawers and make sure you don’t have the items below. If you don’t, everything can be found at the craft store, local supercenter, or Dollar Tree.

  • Free Lion Head Template
  • black cardstock 8×11
  • plastic fork *
  • bright orange and yellow paint
  • Googly Eyes
  • Black Sharpie
  • bright pink paint pen
  • glue stick

Tip: Purchase forks that are smooth on the back, so you get a good fork print. The ones with little ridges won’t make a nice print.

How to Make a Fork Painted Lion

Making this lion craft is so much fun. It’s also super simple. Kids, young and old, can create this craft on their own.

  1. To get started, place a circle template in the middle of your black paper. Trace around it lightly with a pencil.
  2. Next, dip your fork into orange paint and press around the circle with the pointed ends out. You’ll want the fork prints to start just inside the circle to cover up any pencil marks.
  3. Repeat the process with yellow paint.
  4. Then, make your lion face and add ears to the top of the head. Don’t forget the googly eyes.
  5. Trim around the black paper to make it a square if you wish.

For the lion’s face, we added googly eyes, a big black nose, a little smile, and some whiskers. We also added light pink rosy cheeks with the paint pen!

Why not just use a paintbrush?

Paintbrushes are overrated! No, I’m only kidding. Fork painting is just a great way for kids to experiment with different mediums and textures. That’s why I love paper plate crafts so much. Any time kids can get creative with tools that aren’t “normal”, it helps their brains construct new ideas and opinions about the materials in their world.

Painting with forks allows them to see different lines and strokes made from the prongs. It promotes creativity and play. Plus, kids are always excited to use new materials.

Other Ways to Make the Lion’s Mane

Don’t want to use forks to create the mane? You don’t have to. Use whatever tools you have on hand, or let the kids pick. Lay out several different items and see what they come up with.

Try laying out orange and yellow leaves, colorful construction paper, yarn or string, ribbon, buttons, cupcake liners, pipe cleaners, cotton balls and q-tips, paper strips, pasta, paint, and more. You will be surprised by what the kids come up with, especially your older kids.

They might make their own leaf lion craft or a pasta lion craft. Better yet, they might make their own handprint craft with prints around the big cat face. This is such an easy craft to customize and make your own.
