Bookworm caterpillar craft adorable

My kids love reading books, and I’m so grateful that they are little bookworms. My oldest loves all kinds of fiction books, my middle son loves facts books and learning about animals and the world around him and my youngest is a mix of both! My elementary aged daughter and I decided to make our own cute bookworm caterpillar using some supplies we had around the house. If your kids love reading too, try making this adorable craft.

Materials Needed to Make a Bookworm Caterpillar

Like many of the crafts on my site, this one is super simple and only requires a few materials. You might even have them in your home already. If not, head to your local craft store or Dollar Tree for everything you need. Here’s what you will need to get started.

  • Thin cardboard, like from a cereal box or a cracker box
  • Free Eyeball Template, you can also use googly eyes if desired.
  • Paint in green, pink, yellow, light purple, and blue or whatever colors you want!
  • Small Pom Poms to match pink, yellow, purple, and blue
  • Black Pipe Cleaners
  • Small Pink Buttons
  • Black Sharpie

If you aren’t able to find cardboard that works well, colored cardstock also works just fine.

Ways to Use a Bookworm Caterpillar Craft

Many schools have a school library. Within that library, there is most likely a librarian or media specialist who helps with organizing and finding the books. Oftentimes, this person will read a story or teach a short class to students about books, and using the library. This bookworm activity is a great craft for media specialists to do with their students as they celebrate browsing the book stack and finding awesome books.

The bookworms look great displayed around the library or a classroom. Place them on and around stacks of books to encourage reading and finding new genres.

What is a Bookworm?

The infamous bookworm is often seen wearing a graduation hat and sitting on top of a book or on a pile of books. This symbol is widely used as a graduate worm bookworm caterpillar. He/she is meant to represent knowledge and learning from all students. Some people often associate being a bookworm with being nerdy, when in fact, reading is a wonderful outlet and hobby. Encourage kids to read and explore through literature and show them how amazing it is to be a bookworm. They’ll be carrying their own stack of books home from the library in no time.

Read Books About Being a Bookworm

Explain to your kids that being a bookworm is never a bad thing. It means that they are diving into another world and learning TONS just by reading the words on the page. I found a few titles that are about bookworms and why they are so amazing. Reading is a fantastic hobby and a wonderful way to decompress when you need some alone time. Show kids how amazing it can be with these short stories.
