  1. Begin by cutting out your template pieces. Glue them in place.
  2. Using your ultra-fine Sharpie, add stitch lines to the toe, heel, and brim of the sock.
  3. Add the face pieces using glue.
  4. Draw on rosy cheeks using a pink paint pen, markers and colored pencils will also work
  5. Add a horseshoe-shaped piece of cardstock to the top to look like a hanging piece.
  6. Attach holly leaves and berries using green construction paper and mini red pom poms. Instead of holly and berries, you can attach a white ribbon to the brim of the sock.

Hang these from windows, doors, and the fridge using the little paper hook. If you have them, attach a real hook so you can adorn your walls and even your Christmas tree. Clip the stocking onto a display board like this for the holiday season. It’s one of the best places to show off art.

What is the Story Behind Christmas Stockings?

It’s always fun to hear the history behind such popular traditions and after some quick research we found that Christmas stockings originated in European countries when kids would leave their everyday socks out at night to dry above the fireplace. The folklore story tells the tale of Saint Nicholas, who would fill the socks of children with toys and treats. This tradition started with him filling the socks of a family in need, but as the story got out, it’s told that he filled the socks of many children. Of course, the story evolved and has taken many forms since then.

Socks eventually turned into stockings and more elaborate socks. Stocking stuffers became a thing as families filled their children’s socks with treats and small trinkets. We now see stockings with classic designs and custom stockings with embroidery and more. Each member of the family usually has a stocking, including the animals in the household. The stocking has become a staple piece of holiday decor in the American home.
