Why Fine Motor Skills are Important

You may be wondering why I have so many torn paper crafts on my site. For starters, they are simple and so much fun. My older kids enjoy these fun colorful crafts as much as my youngest! One of the underlying reasons, though, is that they help build small muscles in the fingers. It’s important for kids to work on those muscles so they can write as they get older. Not only is learning to write important, but all sorts of things such as doing up buttons, maneuvering zippers, picking up small objects, sewing, typing, and so much more! Torn paper crafts are a fun way to get kids to work on those tiny muscles.

MATERIALS FOR A TORN PAPER VALENTINE HEART

Here are the craft supplies you will need to make this fun craft for younger kids. Older kids will enjoy it, too, of course!

  • Cardstock or construction paper – pink and purple
  • FREE Heart Template – or feel free to draw your own heart!
  • Large Googly Eyes – we used 1 ½ inch size! Kids love big eyes!
  • Black cardstock
  • Glue stick

I used two different shades of pink and purple for the torn paper pieces just to give it more depth! Use any colors you would like; I just chose these because they are some of the Valentine’s Day colors. Other great colors would be different shades of red. When finished, this torn paper craft looks amazing hung up around the room. Kids will love seeing their art project displayed on the wall.

HOW TO MAKE THIS PAPER HEART CRAFT

You can probably tell how to make this craft by simply looking at the images in this post. If not, here are the simple steps for completing this Valentine’s Day craft with your little ones. Make the heart as big or as little as you would like or use our free Heart Template.

  1. Draw a heart shape with a pencil. If you can’t make a heart use our free heart template!
  2. Tear your pink or purple piece of construction paper into pieces and glue them inside the heart shape. Be sure to fill up all the white spaces.
  3. Add the large googly eyes to the center of the heart. I added eyelashes with a black marker!
  4. Don’t forget the sweet smile, and you’re done.

One important piece of this paper art is tearing the paper. Kids may want to use safety scissors to cut up the construction paper into squares, but that won’t be working on their fine motor skills the same. Encourage them to tear small pieces with their fingers. Some younger kids may try to rip huge pieces to fill in large spaces of the heart. Remind them to tear small pieces of paper. While it may seem tedious, it will look so much better when complete.

Valentine’s Day Craft Alternatives

If you don’t want to create this craft on plain paper, you can follow the same steps on contact paper using torn pieces of tissue paper. Lay down a sheet of contact paper sticky side up. Place small squares of tissue paper in a heart shape on the sticky side. Once the heart is filled in, place another piece of contact paper on the top and cut out the heart shape. Be sure to leave a contact paper border, so the two sheets stick together and don’t peel apart. This makes a lovely window hanging!
