Materials to Make a Tassel Tree Craft

This craft requires a little time to make the tassels but has minimal supplies. Here’s what you will need to make your own tassel Christmas tree.

  • Yarn, I used Yarn Bee Comfy Classic in Olive Yarn from Hobby Lobby
  • Wooden Sign with Frame, bought from Hobby Lobby
  • Black and White Ribbon, or color of choice
  • Wooden Stem – we love these! We have used them in a few crafts!
  • Hot Glue Gun

I listed the brand of yarn and materials I used in case you want the exact match, but feel free to use any brand and color of yarn, ribbon, and frame. Craft stores have tons of different yarn colors and varieties to choose from. I do recommend using thinner yarn for easier tassel-making.

How to Make an Easy DIY Tassel Tree

This tassel tree is a cute way to decorate your home in time for the holidays. It’s a great craft for adults or older kids. Making the tassels is the most challenging and most time-consuming part, but everything after that is simple! If you want to make this craft with young kids, make the tassels ahead of time. Instructions for making tassels out of yarn are further down in the post.

  1. Start by making your tassels. You will need 10 total. Total amount might vary depending on your size frame.
  2. Hot glue your tassels to the wooden frame, starting with your bottom row. I placed my stem down to get an idea of where the first layer needed to start and removed it.
  3. In the next layer, lay your tassels in between the ones below them to create a layered effect.
  4. Once everything is glued down, you can glue down any fly-away yarn if needed. Feel free to trim longer pieces as well.
  5. Add a bow or a small star on top of the tree. Glue the stem to the bottom of the tree as well.

Your tassel tree is complete and can now be used as an adorable holiday or winter decoration! it’s a tremendous rustic-style decoration for any home. You can find ribbons, plastic or wooden stars, and even miniature angels at the craft store or Dollar Tree.

How to Make Yarn Tassels

You will need yarn, scissors, and something to wrap your yarn around. I used a small 3-inch by 4-inch piece of cardboard. You can also use a coaster, stack of sticky notes, or something similar in size.

  1. Lay a piece of yarn about 10 inches long across your box or object.
  2. Wrap your yarn in the opposite direction around the box or object about 20 times. Adjust this as needed to make bushier or thinner tassels.
  3. Use the 10-inch piece of yarn to tie the 20 strands together. Cut the strands off the box on the opposite side of where you tied the knot.
  4. Tie another piece of yarn around the top of the tassel to create a gathered bunch.
  5. Trim the ends of the tassel to make the pieces of yarn even.

Now you have a small tassel! Repeat this process as many times as needed. They are so fun and cute! Now you can use them to make all sorts of Christmas decor and crafts.

Make a Christmas Tassel Ornament

If you don’t want to glue your tassels to a wooden frame, try making it into an ornament. Glue the tassels onto a piece of cardboard and cut it into the shape of a tree. Then attach a string or hook, and you have a cute ornament for your holiday tree. The yarn tassel tree can be made in different colors, giving your tree some dimension!

  1. I need to make tassel trees in different sized frames. How do i figure out how big the cardboard piece should be? What are the measurements of your frame and cardboard piece? I tend to overcomplicate things. LOL
