HOW TO VIDEO:
Materials Needed – Glitter Lava Lamps for Kids
- Drinking glass, masons jars or other glass jars
- Water
- Canola oil, vegetable oil, or baby oil (for the clearest result, baby oil is recommended, though more expensive)
- Food coloring – we used blue, green, and hot pink!
- Alka-Seltzer tablets
- Chunky glitter (fine glitter will just make your water cloudy so be sure to get the chunky variety)

How To Make A Glitter Lava Lamps for Kids
Step 1: Prepare Your Jar
Start by filling each clear container or bottle about two-thirds full with the oil of your choice. Top off with water, about 1/4 cup, leaving about an inch of space at the top. The oil and water will separate with the oil floating on top.

Step 2: Add Color and Sparkle
Choose your food coloring — blue, green, or hot pink — and add a few drops to the water. The color will sink through the oil and mix with the water.
Before adding the Alka-Seltzer, sprinkle a generous amount of chunky glitter into the bottle. This will be enough so that you can see it moving when the reaction happens.

Step 3: Activate Your Lava Lamp
Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a few pieces and drop them into the bottle one at a time. Watch as the colored water and glitter begin to bubble up through the oil, creating a captivating lava-like effect.
You can add more tablet pieces to keep the effect going longer.

Crafty Tips:
- Light It Up: For an extra mesmerizing lava lamp, place your bottle on top of a flashlight or small LED light. This will illuminate the lamp from below and enhance the glittery spectacle, especially in dim lighting.
- Safety First: Make sure to handle the Alka-Seltzer tablets with dry hands to prevent them from fizzing prematurely. Also, be sure to supervise younger children during the project to ensure safe handling of all materials.
- Reuse and Recycle: These lava lamps can be capped and used again, depending on how many Alkap Seltzer tabs you added. Simply add more Alka-Seltzer when you want to reactivate the lamp.
