How To Make a Coffee Filter Flowers
Step 1: Gather your Coffee Filters and Color!
Start by gathering your coffee filters. I like to stack 2 coffee filters together. The color from the markers and water will bleed into the second coffee filter so you get double for your efforts 🙂 We made 2 of the same color for each flower but if you would like your flower even fuller you can do up to 4. Place your coffee filters on a covered surface.
Color the outer edge of your coffee filters and then color the center of your filters. Add various designs and patterns in the middle of your coffee filter, keeping in mind that once the water is added the design will spread.

Step 2: Spray with Water
Lightly spray your coffee filters with water. Don’t oversaturate them but make sure you spray them enough that the colors blend together. Allow to dry fully. We prefer to carefully transfer our colored coffee filters to a layer of paper towels. We use a hair blow dryer to speed up the drying process.

Step 3: Fold and Add Stems
Once your coffee filters are dry, fold the individual coffee filters in half, repeat two more times. Bundle 2 coffee filters (per flower) in your hand. At this time we like to pinch the folded coffee filters together at the bottom and carefully Twist a pipe cleaner around the base of the flower. This will act as your stem.

Step 4: Make Flowers!
Repeat with your remaining flowers. spread out the top petals. If needed you can use a touch of glue from a hot glue gun (adults only), staple, or clear tape to carefully secure your petals together.

Crafty Tips & Classroom Use
- This craft is perfect for kindergarten and preschoolers with some assistance. If you would like to have older kids tackle this project you can have your artists make petals on their folder coffee filters (before they have been spread out) with a pair of scissors. It will be fun to see the various petals your child can create.
- A fun alternative to washable markers would be to use watercolors for your pop of color! You can use a classic watercolor pallet or liquid watercolor that has been added to a small bowl of water. Use a craft paint brush or dropper to disperse the color onto the filters.
- This project is a fantastic way to practice some fine motor skills. Your child will strengthen their pincer muscles when coloring, folding, and twisting!
- Don’t want to use pipe cleaners? Secure your flowers to a straw with masking tape to create another version of flower stem.
