How To Make Apple Stamped Ladybugs

Step 1: Prepare Your Apple Stamp

Begin by cutting the apple (adults only) in half from top to bottom to create a flat stamping surface on each half. Remove any seeds that may interfere with the paint.

Step 2: Stamp The Apples

Dip the cut side of the apple half into red paint, ensuring it’s evenly coated. Alternatively, you can use a brush to apply a thin layer of paint directly to the apple. (this is our preferred method in a classroom setting) Press the painted side onto the cardstock firmly but gently. Aim to fit about six apple prints on the paper, spaced well apart. Leave them to dry completely. You can use a hair blow dryer for faster drying.

Step 3: Add Details

Once the red apple prints are dry, use a black Sharpie to draw a straight line down the center of each apple print to create the ladybug’s body division.

Dip a Qtip into black paint and dot it around one half of the apple print to mimic the spots on a ladybug.

Draw a half-circle at the top of each print for the head using the Sharpie. Add two antennae coming from the top of the head and draw three legs on each side of the body.

Stick small googly eyes on the head to bring your ladybugs to life.

Crafty Tips:

  • Color Variation: While traditional ladybugs are red, feel free to explore other colors like orange, yellow, or even green to create a variety of ‘fantasy ladybugs.’
  • Educational Aspect: Use this craft to teach kids about ladybugs and their role in the garden, such as how they eat aphids and help plants.
  • Group Activity: This project is great for groups. Have each child make their own ladybug prints and create a large collage from all the prints for a colorful display.

This apple stamp ladybug craft is not just a fun activity but also a wonderful way to engage with children about nature and the importance of insects. It’s simple enough for young kids to enjoy while also offering room for creativity and personalization. Hang the finished ladybugs on your fridge, use them as greeting cards, or compile them into a bug book. Whatever you choose, these cute crafts are sure to brighten any space!
