Add this fun astronaut craft to your unit on solar systems and outer space. Kids of all ages will enjoy making their own astronaut.
Learning about outer space is always so much fun for kids. The solar system is FULL of amazing things, and kids are always up for a space adventure. I have made some moon and alien crafts in the past, and they’re always a hit. I use white paint to create a fun galaxy background, and there are so many fun things you can do with it. Use this little Astronaut Craft for your space unit or to intrigue kids outside of this world. This craft is truly out of this world!
How to Video:
Materials Needed for the Astronaut Craft
All you need to create this adorable craft are a few craft supplies. Find everything you need at the craft store or local Walmart. I sometimes have success buying online as well. Let’s be honest; that is often the easiest option, so it’s delivered straight to your door. Here’s what you need.
- Cardstock in black, white, dark blue, green, blue, red, and yellow
- FREE Astronaut Template
- White paint
- Glitter silver stars
- White Paint Pen
Instructions for Making an Astronaut Craft
This craft comes with two parts. You’ll have to make your background first and then complete the craft once the paint is dry. It’s super simple but takes a bit longer because of the paint.
Making a Galaxy Background
- To do this, dip a paintbrush in white paint (I water mine down just a bit).
- Hold the paintbrush over your black paper and tap it against your finger or another brush to create little white specks on the paper. This makes a cool galaxy background.
Adding the Astronaut
- Then, cut out the astronaut template and piece it together.
- Next, add a highlight to the helmet piece using a white paint pen or crayon.
- Glue the land on the Earth and trim as needed. Glue it to your paper in the corner.
- Finally, add glitter and silver stars.
If you don’t want to buy craft star stickers, you can easily draw your own stars using white paint, a white paint pen, or a white crayon. Silver markers may work as well!
Fun Astronaut Books for Kids
I LOVE sharing fun read-alouds with you, and I hope your kids enjoy them too. I enjoy reading books to my kids before or after we complete a craft. It brings everything full circle and helps them with critical thinking skills as they process whatever we are working on. Here are some fun astronaut stories for kids:
- I am Neil Armstrong by Brad Meltzer – kids in elementary school love these books series. They’re a simple way to teach about all sorts of historical figures.
- Astronaut Training by Aneta Cruz – this story is perfect for your kids who are obsessed with space and going on their own space journey.
- Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed – even girls dream of going to space. This is one of our favorite books about space because of the strong story.
- Luna Muna by Kellie Gerardi – here is another inspirational book about a girl with big dreams.
Add these fun titles to your lessons and activities with your kids. Educational activities like this are a great way to broaden their horizons and show them all the cool things they can experience in this world. The craft is the perfect activity to tie up loose ends as they learn about our solar system.
If you enjoyed this craft, you will also love my Moon Craft and my Alien Craft. Both the moon and adorable alien crafts are easy to make for young children. These fun space crafts are a great addition to any lesson about outer space or just for fun. Kids will enjoy seeing these intricate bulletin board ideas displayed when they are finished. Happy Crafting!
