Materials to Make a Paper Plate Scarecrow

Like many of my craft ideas, there aren’t many craft supplies you need to make this cute scarecrow. The scarecrow paper plate is easy to make and is a great way to work on fine motor skills with your little ones.

  • Dessert-size paper plate
  • Cardstock paper, brown and yellow
  • Light tan paint
  • Orange craft foam
  • Pink buttons
  • Sunflower Felt Stick or similar sticker, if desired
  • Black sharpie or Paint Pen
  • FREE Eyeball template
  • Scarecrow Hat Template

If you don’t want to use paper eyes, try large googly eyes instead. Googly eyes are always a fun addition to kid’s crafts. They make things just a little more exciting and silly.

How to Make a Paper Plate Scarecrow

To make this sweet scarecrow, complete with a triangle nose, follow these simple instructions. Your adorable scarecrows will look fantastic!

  1. First, paint your paper plate and let it dry completely.
  2. While your plate dries, cut out your hat piece using the template.
  3. Cut out your hair pieces using yellow strips of paper. Cut longer pieces for a girl scarecrow and shorter for a boy, or any way you would like them to look.
  4. Add your face elements, including eyelashes, if you wish. This includes the eyes and triangle nose out of orange paper. Draw a crooked line for the scarecrow’s smile and add dashed lines across it for the stitching.
  5. Finally, add your sunflower to the hat.

Pro tip: tuck the hair pieces up under the hat, so the top of them are hidden.

How to Make a Scarecrow Puppet

Easily turn this scarecrow craft into a puppet by attaching popsicle sticks. Kids can hold the stick as they retell fun stories or use them during imaginative play. It’s such a fun craft to use with stories like “The Scarecrow” by Beth Ferry or “Little Scarecrow Boy” by Margaret Wise Brown. Older children will love using the puppets to act out the stories and retell them from memory.

Displaying Ideas

To display your child’s craft, simply hole punch the hat and attach a string. You will be able to hang it anywhere in the house. You can also attach a magnet to the back of the craft, so it hangs nicely on the fridge. I recommend buying magnet tape, so you have plenty for future crafts. It sticks nicely to the backs of crafts, and then you can hang them up yearly.

Other Ways to Use This Craft

If you teach in a classroom or homeschool your little ones, use this craft to study the letter S. It’s a great way to work on letter recognition in those early years. Use it with preschool and kindergarten-aged students to practice letters and fine motor skills. Kids will enjoy creating this craft before staying home for fall break with their families.

It’s the perfect project to decorate a bulletin board, to use with a fall read-aloud story, to work on letter recognition and fine motor skills, or to create just for fun. Parents and loved ones will love seeing the cute paper plate scarecrow craft hanging up around the house or in the classroom. Pair them with these Paper Plate Pumpkins, and you have some great fall classroom decor.
