How To Make a Coffee Filter Sea Turtle

Step 1: Color Your Coffee Filter

  • Lay a piece of wax or parchment paper on your work surface to keep it clean. This will help with easy cleanup and prevent any color transfer from the markers.
  • Flatten the coffee filter and begin coloring it with your washable markers. Feel free to use swirls, blocks of color, or stripes—get creative! The goal is to cover most of the coffee filter with vibrant color.

Step 2: Blend The Colors

  • Once you’ve finished coloring, lightly mist the coffee filter with water using your spray bottle set to a fine mist. Watch as the colors start to blend and bleed into each other, creating beautiful patterns. Carefully remove the coffee filter from the wax paper and place it on a paper towel to dry. For quicker results, you can use a blow dryer; it typically takes about 30 seconds. You just need to hold it down with one finger or the end of a wooden spoon so it doesn’t fly away on you!

Step 3: Cut Out The Parts & Assemble

  • While the coffee filter is drying, cut out the turtle’s body parts from the green cardstock. You’ll need a head, tail, and flippers.
  • Once your coffee filter is dry, trim it if necessary to fit on your 12 x 12 inch light sky blue cardstock, which will serve as the background. Glue the coffee filter to the center of the cardstock.
  • Arrange and glue the cutout cardstock pieces (head, tail, and flippers) around the coffee filter to form the turtle’s body.

Tips for Making This Sea Turtle Craft with Kids

Use Washable Markers

  • Washable markers work best for this project because they blend beautifully when sprayed with water. Plus, cleanup is much easier if little hands accidentally color beyond the coffee filter!

Let the Coffee Filter Dry Completely

  • If your kids are eager to keep crafting, use a hair dryer on a low setting to speed up the drying process. A dry coffee filter will help prevent tearing when assembling the turtle.

Pre-Cut Pieces for Younger Children

  • Making this craft with preschoolers? Consider cutting out the turtle template pieces ahead of time so little ones can focus on coloring, gluing, and creating.

Turn It Into a Learning Activity

  • While crafting, talk about where sea turtles live, what they eat, and why it’s important to keep our oceans clean. It’s an easy way to combine creativity with learning.

Create a Whole Turtle Family

  • Encourage kids to experiment with different color combinations and make several sea turtles. Every shell turns out unique, making it fun to create an entire underwater scene.
