How Do I Make My Own Pizza Dough

Making pizza dough can take some time and practice but it isn’t difficult. It’s pretty easy to prep ahead of time once you get the hang of it. The kids enjoy helping and like the taste of the pizza much better than store bought.

  1. Sprinkle the yeast over 1/3 cup of warm water in a large bowl
  2. Stir in the sugar and let it stand for about 5 minutes.
  3. Combine together in a medium bowl: cold water, oil, salt, garlic salt, oregano, and 1/2 of the flour.
  4. Add this mixture to your yeast mixture.
  5. Add the rest of the flour.
  6. Knead the dough by hand or with a handheld mixer until it is smooth. This takes roughly 3-5 minutes. I recommend doing this on a floured surface so your dough doesn’t stick to the work surface.
  7. Let the pizza dough rise until it doubles in size. Usually takes 1-1 1/2 hours.

This makes 2 to 3 pizza crusts depending on the thickness desired.

Let the dough sit on your counter covered by a kitchen towel in room temperature. You can also lay a sheet of plastic wrap over the dough.

Use a rolling pin or your hands to stretch the dough over your pizza stone or baking sheets. You will have to pull and press it a bit to make it stay where you want it. I use a fork to poke holes in the dough once it is stretched out. I find this just helps the dough sit and bake more evenly

Is Pizza Dough Better with Bread Flour or All-Purpose Flour?

There is some controversy over which type of flour to use and I’ve found that you can’t go wrong with either. Depending on how you make your dough and the settings on your oven, bread flour can provide a slightly more stretchy dough structure. We typically use all-purpose flour just because it is easier to find at the grocery store and I haven’t had any issues with using it.

Bread flour has a higher gluten content and more protein in it, making it a little stretchier and chewier once baked. Just choose your flour based on your preferences or try making the crust with both to see which you like better. I usually can’t tell too much of a difference.

Baking Your Pizza Crust

Now that your dough has risen, you are ready to make your pizza. We cook our pizzas at about 450 degrees in our conventional oven. Stretch your pizza dough over a square, rectangular, or circular pizza stone or baking sheet. Make sure you grease your pan if things tend to stick to it. Add your pizza sauce and desired toppings. Then, bake your pizza for about 10 – 15 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the toppings are a desired meltiness.

Be sure to watch your pizzas closely since oven heating and cooking times will vary based on your dough and oven settings.

This will certainly be the best pizza dough recipe you make with your family! Have fun adding your favorite toppings. We love using mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, and peppers! We switch it up a lot to make things fun.
