Treasure Map Craft for Kids

We made this treasure map craft for kids as an end-of-the-year art project, and the students absolutely loved creating their own pirate islands! This fun pirate-themed activity combines multiple art mediums like Sharpie markers, colored pencils, and watercolor paint to create a one-of-a-kind pirate treasure map craft.

I had students from 2nd grade through 6th grade design their own islands, and it was so fun watching each child’s creativity shine through. Every treasure map turned out completely unique with different landmarks, trails, beaches, volcanoes, and pirate-inspired details. Students started with a doodle inspiration sheet that helped spark ideas while still giving them plenty of freedom to create their own imaginative treasure map designs.

How To Make Treasure Map Doodle Craft

Step 1: Design Your Island

Start by drawing the outline of your island on the paper. It can be any shape you like—let your imagination run wild! Think about the contour of a real island or make up your own fantastical shape. I had one student make their island the shape of an armadillo 🙂

Step 2: Add Creative Doodles

Using the inspiration from our free doodle sheet or your own ideas, begin to fill in your island. Draw everything from palm trees and treasure chests to pirate ships and sea monsters. Get creative with the details and make the map your own.

Step 3: Personalize Your Map

Name different parts of your island with fun or meaningful names. These could be silly, spooky, or anything that has special significance to you and your family. This step is great for adding a personal touch and can be a fun way to involve kids in storytelling.

For a fun and crafty finish, use scissors with decorative edges to cut around your map, giving it an old or torn look. Then, lightly rub a brown crayon around the edges of the paper to add an aged, antique feel.

Step 4: Add a Splash of Ocean Water

Add a pop of color around your island with blue watercolors! Paint around your island.

Step 5: Wrinkle it Up

Once your island paper is completely dry carefully crumble it in your hands and open it back up. This helps give your project a realistic aged look 🙂

Crafty Tips:

  • Let kids color with crayons or colored pencils for the best results. If you plan to watercolor the background, avoid using watercolor markers since the colors may bleed when painted over.
  • Gently crumbling the paper helps give the treasure map an aged, worn look. The more you crumple it, the softer the paper will become — just be sure the artwork is completely dry first!
  • Ultra fine-tip Sharpies work best for adding all the tiny treasure map details like trails, labels, waves, and doodles.
