How to Make Homemade Stromboli

You can use frozen pizza dough or your own homemade recipe. I also have an easy Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe on my site. Prepare your stromboli on a lightly floured surface so it doesn’t stick to the work surface. You will need a large baking sheet to prepare your classic stromboli recipe.

  1. Roll the room-temperature dough out into a large rectangle (about 12 ×14″). Do this on a piece of parchment paper, then pop it on the baking pan. Spread the pizza sauce on top of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border around the perimeter.
  2. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the top. Next, add the sliced salami, ham, and pepperoni. Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg. Then, roll up the dough like a jelly roll. Pinch the edges together and tuck under.
  3. Brush the top of the dough with the egg wash.
  4. Next, sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese, and then evenly sprinkle the garlic powder over the top.
  5. Gently make shallow diagonal cuts into the top every 2 inches.
  6. Bake the stromboli at 375 for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. If you are nervous it’s not done, lift an edge with a spatula and ensure the bottom is brown.
  7. Let sit for a few minutes. Use a sharp serrated or sharp knife to chop into 8-10 slices.
  8. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and dip in warm pizza sauce to serve.

This recipe is sure to be one the whole family loves. Use it for pizza night, a large gathering, or a regular family meal. Be sure to add lots of cheese, and enjoy! You’re sure to eat the entire stromboli in one sitting, it’s that good.

How Do You Keep a Stromboli from Getting Soggy?

With all of the heavy stuffing inside the dough, stromboli can get soggy. To keep this from happening, use mozzarella cheese as it will help keep the moisture low. Spread a thin layer of cheese with each of the layers of meat or vegetable to separate cold cuts and veggies that may cause condensation and moisture.

How to Store Leftover Stromboli

I will show you how to easily store your leftover stromboli for later. First, place the stromboli in an airtight container. This includes a Ziploc bag or plastic Tupperware. Use plastic wrap or aluminum foil to wrap your stromboli. Then, place them in the fridge for later consumption. Since stromboli most likely includes deli products, they must be kept cold, so they don’t spoil.

Eat the stromboli cold or reheat it in the oven for a few minutes to reheat the cheese. For best results, use a toaster oven or conventional oven to reheat. A microwave may leave them a little soggy.

What is the Difference Between Stromboli and Calzone?

Stromboli usually uses mozzarella, while a calzone uses a blend of cheeses (primarily ricotta). The mozzarella helps keep the moisture low in a stromboli. A stromboli is rolled up somewhat like a cinnamon roll, while a calzone is folded like a pocket.
