How To Make a Fingerprint Sunflower Craft

Step 1: Paint your Sunflower Circles

Using our circle template, paint your circles in a light brown or tan color.

Step 2: Creating the Face

Using a q-tip, dip your q-tip into brown paint and dot inside your painted circle to look like sunflower seeds. All to dry completely.

Step 3: Make your Sunflower Petals

Make your sunflower petals by dipping your fingertip into a small amount of yellow and orange paint. Press your fingerprint onto the paper near the edge of the center circle, then gently drag your finger outward to form a petal shape. Continue around the circle until your sunflower is full and bright.

Step 4: Making the Background

Tear your two shades of blue paper and your green paper into strips. Glue them onto your brown sheet to create a layered background—brown for dirt at the bottom, green for grass in the middle, and blue for the sky at the top.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Cut long strips and leaf shapes from green paper. We added line details with a green marker but you can skip that part. Glue them to your background. Glue your flowers to the top of your stems.

CRAFTY TIPS:

  • Mix paint shades – Blend a touch of orange into yellow paint for petals with a warm, autumn glow.
  • Practice first – Let kids try a few petals on scrap paper so they get used to the “press and drag” motion.
  • Use baby wipes nearby – Fingerprint painting can get messy, so having wipes ready keeps the project moving smoothly.
  • Add leaf texture – Draw veins on green paper leaves with a marker or colored pencil before gluing.
  • Vary the seed color – Use a mix of light and dark brown Q-tip dots for a more realistic sunflower center.
  • Create a sunflower patch – Make several flowers in different sizes and arrange them together for a bigger display.
