Pipe Cleaner Craft for Kids
This rainbow pipe cleaner craft is so fun for kids of all ages but young children will especially enjoy this creative activity filled with creativity, fun motor skills, and just pure fun!. My daughter recently learned the color order of the rainbow and has since been doodling little rainbows all over and wanting to make as many rainbow things as she can. This cheerful craft was made together one afternoon using some basic craft supplies and just a little bit of time. We like to keep our craft activities pretty simple around here and the less mess the better 🙂

HOW TO VIDEO:
Materials Needed for Pipe Cleaner Rainbow:
- Paper Plates– we used a dinner size paper plate – we like the inexpensive ones!
- Blue Paint – we chose to go with a soft sky type blue but any blue will work
- Pipe Cleaners– one pipe cleaner for each color of the rainbow – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple.
- Yellow Cardstock or Construction paper
- Black Sharpie
- Googly Eyes– we love using self-adhesive googly eyes, but they aren’t always easy to be found so regular glue on yourself googly eyes works just as well.
- Cotton Balls
- Hot Glue or Double Sided Tape
- School Glue
- Scissors

How To Make a Pipe Cleaner Rainbow Craft
Step 1: Paint Paper Plate
- Paint your paper plate in the blue color paint you decided to use. Let Dry.
- Trim your pipe cleaners. I started off by taking 1 inch off of my red pipe cleaner. I then made each additional pipe cleaner a tad short from each other in rainbow order. This does not have to perfect it just helps the pipe cleaners fit nicer on the plate. For Example: orange was slightly shorter than red, yellow was slightly shorter than orange….etc. Your shorter piece should be purple which is the last color of the rainbow.

Step 2: Creating Your Rainbow
- Add two pieces of double sided tape at the bottom of your paper plate with a few inches in between them.
- Press the ends of your pipe cleaners onto the tape to form a bow shape. You can also do lay your rainbow pipe cleaners down one by one with a dab of hot glue BUT only adults should use a hot glue gun.

Step 3: Add Fluffy Clouds
- With liquid glue, hot glue, or more double sided tape add cotton balls to the base of your pipe cleaner rainbow. We like to slightly fluff our cotton balls before adhering.

Step 4: Add a Sunshine
- Use your yellow cardstock and cut out a circle. Glue to your paper plate where desired.
- Make small strips of sunshine rays from your yellow paper and glue around sun.
- Add googly eyes, pink cardstock cheeks and a smiley face.

Homeschool and Classroom Use:
This makes for a great activity for preschoolers and lower elementary students.
- Teach your children the colors in the rainbow and see how well they remember when they form their own rainbow!
- Bending the color pipe cleaner is a great fine motor skill activity. You can even string on some matching color pony beads for a color matching fun activity.
Crafty Tips:
What if I don’t have cotton balls?
Feel free to swap cotton balls with white pom poms or white crumbled tissue paper if desired.
