Popsicle Stick Nativity Craft

Celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with this simple and heartfelt Popsicle Stick Nativity Craft! Perfect for little hands, this craft allows kids to create their very own nativity scene while learning about the story of Jesus’ birth. With a few basic craft supplies and our free printable template, kids can color Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus before assembling their beautiful nativity display. This project is an ideal activity for Sunday School, family time, or holiday crafting.

Materials Needed To Make A Popsicle Stick Nativity

• Free Nativity Scene Printable Template
• 5 jumbo popsicle sticks
• Brown paint
• Black cardstock (or any dark-colored paper like a pretty blue sky!)
• Star stickers or glitter foam stars
• Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
• Scissors
• Glue stick or hot glue

How To Make a Popsicle Stick Nativity

Step 1: Prepare the Nativity Frame:

• Paint your jumbo popsicle sticks brown and allow them to dry.
• Using our FREE Nativity template cut out your building piece. Glue your popsicle sticks to the paper. I prefer to use hot glue for this step but only adults should use it.

Step 2: Color and Cut the Nativity Characters:

• Print our free template, which includes Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus.
• Let the kids color each character however they’d like. Once colored, carefully cut out the pieces.

Assemble the Scene:

• Glue the nativity characters onto the black background inside the popsicle stick frame.
• Decorate the scene with star stickers or foam stars to represent the night sky. You can even cut out a larger star from the template or use glitter to make it shine!

Crafty Tips:

1. Prep in Advance for Groups:
   If you’re crafting with a group (like in a Sunday School class), paint the popsicle sticks and cut out the backgrounds beforehand. This allows kids to jump straight into assembling and coloring their nativity scenes when shorter craft times are the only option.
2. Use Double-Sided Tape for Younger Kids:
   Instead of glue, consider using double-sided tape for sticking pieces together. It’s less messy and dries much faster than liquid glue.
3. Add flare to the Stable Roof:
   If you want to add more detail, glue small pieces of straw, raffia, or shredded paper to the roof of the popsicle stick frame to give it a rustic stable look.
4. Mix in Metallics:
   Use metallic markers or paints for the star accents or character outlines to give the craft a festive shimmer.
5. Experiment with Background Colors:
   While black cardstock works great for a nighttime sky, kids can also experiment with dark blue or navy paper. Add tiny dots of white paint for extra “stars” to create a more detailed sky.
