How To Make a Thankful Wreath

Step 1: Preparing the Leaves

Download and Print the Leaf Template – Start by downloading the free leaf template. We printed our leaf templates directly onto the paper for easy cutting! *

We chose to have 4 different colored leaves and for each color we cut out 3 leaves. 12 leaves seemed to be a great amount to keep the wreath nice and full. You may feel free to do more or less leaves. We also freehand cut out some small leaves to stick in between the bigger leaves. This just added some pop of color and dimension to our project.

*Alternatively, you can print your template onto white paper, cut the leaves out, and then use them to trace the shape onto your colored paper. You will then cut out your traced leaves.

Step 2: Prepare your Plate

Make your wreath shape: Cut out the center of your plate. Test to see if you cut enough of the center out by laying a couple leaves on top. You don’t want to see too much of the plate under your leaves. Once you are happy with your wreath, paint it green. Allow your plate to fully dry.

Step 3: Adding Your Thankfulness

Write What You’re Thankful For – Start off by adding some simple line art to your leaves, we used markers! Then on each leaf, have your child write something they’re thankful for. It can be as simple as “Mom and Dad,” “My pet,” or “Ice cream!” Encourage kids to think about their favorite things and people, making it a meaningful part of the craft.

Step 4: Bringing it all together

Assemble the Wreath – After writing, it’s time to assemble the wreath. Glue or tape (double sided tape is great for this) the leaves in a circle, overlapping them slightly for a layered effect. You can arrange the colors in a pattern, or just go with whatever looks best! Add some of your small green leaves in areas around your wreath.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Print off the “Give Thanks” Banner and glue to the center of the wreath. We provided a banner that has no words in our template if you would prefer to use that one you can write your own messaging. Add a small bow to the top if desired. Tape a loop of jute or string to the back of your wreath for hanging!

Crafty Tips

  • For younger kids you can pre-cut the leaves so all they have to do is add their veins, what they are thankful for and paste!
  • Feel free to keep the plate white if you don’t want to paint. You can also color the plate green. We chose to paint it green just so the white underneath didn’t stand out quite as much
  • Don’t have a great place to hang this on the wall? Go ahead and add a magnet to the back and it can be a refrigerator wreath 🙂
  • This is a great Thanksgiving Day project to make while you are waiting for the turkey dinner!
