HOW TO VIDEO:

How to Make a Watercolor Rainbow

My kids adored making this craft because they got to make pretty designs on the rainbow before starting. Drawing rainbows is super fun, but adding beautiful designs that magically appear when the paint is applied is even more fun. It’s sort of like an easy experiment!

  1. First, print out the rainbow template.
  2. Next, trace over the bow lines with your black crayon.
  3. Using your white crayon, draw designs on each of the bows. This step might be hard to see, so do it in good lighting for the best effect.
  4. Using some water (just a small amount) and a paintbrush, paint your watercolors over the bows. As you paint, your white crayon designs should show through.
  5. Glue cotton balls on either side of the rainbow to finish it up.

Watercolor painting tips

Watercolors are pretty self-explanatory, but here are some tips I’ve learned through all of my craftings. The more water you use, the lighter your colors will be. If you want darker colors, use less water. I prefer more vibrant and bright colors, so I use less water.

This may be obvious, but dip your paintbrush into a cup of water between colors, so you don’t end up with a murky brown as you paint.

What does the rainbow mean in Noah’s Story?

God asked Noah to make an ark to hold 2 of every kind of animal and his family to keep his family safe. Heavy rains came for 40 days and 40 nights while Noah and his family stayed safe in the Ark. When the rain stopped and the Ark came to land safely in the mountains, Noah sent a dove into the world. When it returned with a small olive branch he knew the waters were receding. God sent a rainbow to Noah and to his children today as a promise to never destroy the whole earth with a flood again.

This simple craft is perfect for a Sunday school lesson or a lesson plan about the colors of the rainbow. Even if you don’t teach in a classroom, it’s a great activity to do with your own kids at home.

Use this rainbow arts and crafts activity to show kids that God keeps his promises.
