How To Make a Torn Paper Sunflower
Step 1: Preparing the Paper
Start by gathering your yellow and brown cardstock. Rip your brown cardstock into small pieces roughly 1/2 inch to 1 inch in size. Rip your yellow paper into 2-3 strips of paper. The pieces don’t need to be uniform—uneven edges add character to the sunflower. This part is GREAT for little kids. It might be hard for them at first but this will help develop those important pincer muscles!
Draw a small 2 inch circle towards the top middle of your paper. This will act as a guide line for your yellow petals.

Step 2: Create the Flower
Using a glue stick or liquid glue, have your child form a circle with the torn yellow pieces on a piece of paper or cardstock. This will be the sunflower’s petals. Then, fill in the center of the circle with the torn brown pieces to create the sunflower’s center.

Step 3: Add the Stems and Leaves
Cut a strip of green paper for the stem and glue it below the sunflower’s head. Then, cut out leaf shapes from the green paper and attach them to the stem. We used a green marker to add a little detail to our leaves.

Step 4: Add the Face
What’s a sunflower without a smile? Attach the googly eyes to the brown center of the flower. Cut out a small black paper mouth and glue it on, just below the eyes. For the finishing touch, add two small pink circles for rosy cheeks.

Crafty Tips:
- Mix and Match: Let your child choose different shades of yellow or brown to add depth to the sunflower.
- Add their own Personality: Let kids add their own googly eyes, hand drawn eyes, or hand drawn smiley faces!
- Prep Ahead: If your kids are too little to tear all the paper by themselves you can tear a pile of paper for them! Then they can just have fun glueing their pieces in place.
This Torn Paper Sunflower Craft is not only fun but also helps improve fine motor skills as kids tear, glue, and assemble the pieces. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to bring a bit of sunshine into your home, no matter the season.
So grab your supplies, gather the kids, and let’s create some happy sunflowers together! Happy crafting!
