How To Make a Handprint Penguin

Step 1: Create your Penguin Body

Create the Handprint Penguin: Start by tracing your child’s hand on a piece of black paper and cut it out. You can also use our our free penguin template for kids that don’t like to have their hand traced but still want to participate.

Step 2: Adding the Belly

Add the White Belly: Cut out the small oval shape from your template and glue to handprint.

Decorate the Face: Attach googly eyes above the white belly. Cut a small triangle from orange paper and glue it under the eyes for the penguin’s nose. Add rosy cheeks with a hole punch and pink cardstock.

Step 3: Adding the Final Details

Add Earmuffs: Cut a small piece of pipe cleaner and curve it into an arch. Glue the ends of the pipe cleaner to either side of the handprint penguin. Take two small pom-poms and glue one to each end of the pipe cleaner.

Crafty Tips:

  • Alternative Materials: If you don’t have pipe cleaners on hand, use a strip of paper or ribbon for the earmuff band.
  • Custom Colors: Encourage kids to personalize their penguins by using different colors for the earmuffs.
  • Name and Date: Write your child’s name and the date on the back of the penguin for a keepsake you’ll treasure for years.
  • Add Glitter: Sprinkle a little glitter on the white belly or around the edges of the handprint for a frosty, wintery effect.
  • Background Fun: Create a snowy scene by gluing the penguin onto blue cardstock and adding cotton ball snowbanks or snowflake stickers.
  • Accessorize: Let kids get creative by adding a scarf made from ribbon or a tiny paper bowtie to their penguin.
  • Make it a Magnet: Attach a small magnet to the back of the penguin so it can hang on the fridge for everyone to admire.

This Handprint Penguin is a wonderful winter craft that encourages creativity and fine motor skills while celebrating the season. Gather your supplies, grab the kids, and have fun making memories with this adorable project!
