Materials Needed To Make This Rainbow Suncatcher Craft
- Rainbow Template
- Eyeball Template, if desired
- Rainbow-colored tissue paper squares**
- Self-adhesive laminating paper
- Black cardstock
- White cardstock
- Googly eyes
- Pink cardstock (for cheeks – we used a hole punch to make circles)
- Black Sharpie
- Scissors
** You can cut your own tissue paper squares from large sheets of tissue paper. For this project we used tissue paper squares that were about 1 inch square.
How To Make This Rainbow Suncatcher Craft
Step 1: Make the Rainbow Frame
- Print your rainbow template and trace it onto black cardstock. Then, draw a smaller rainbow line about ¼ to ½ inch inside the original rainbow shape—just like you would with a typical suncatcher. Carefully cut out the center to create a black rainbow-shaped frame.
- If you choose to make your own tissue paper squares cut them into 1 inch pieces, otherwise you can purchase these pre-cut squares!
Step 2: Build the Suncatcher Base
Peel the backing off one sheet of self-adhesive laminating paper and lay it sticky side up. Press the black rainbow frame onto the sticky sheet to hold it in place.
Step 3: Add the Rainbow Colors
Using the pre-cut tissue paper squares, begin filling in the rainbow frame. Go in color order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Kids can overlap pieces for extra fun and brightness!
Step 4: Seal it Up
Once your rainbow is filled in, place a second sheet of laminating paper on top, sticky side down. Press gently to seal everything in place.
Step 5: Add the Cloud Face
Cut out cloud shapes from white cardstock using the cloud part of the template. Add printable googly eyes, pink circle cheeks (cut from pink cardstock), and your black paper smile.
Crafty Tips for a Perfect Suncatcher:
- Use pre-cut tissue paper squares to save time and avoid mess.
- A craft knife makes it easier to cut out the rainbow center, but ONLY adults should use this. This will help in prepping the frames ahead of time if working with smaller children.
- Let kids mix up the colors if they want to personalize their rainbow. It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be fun!
- Hang the finished suncatcher on a window using tape or a suction hook for instant color and cheer!
