Thumbprint Butterfly Flower Pots: a fun and simple craft idea the kids will love! It makes a great keepsake idea for Mothers Day

Our house is constantly filled with crafts that my kids have made at school and at home.  It’s hard to keep everything they make over the years because their endless projects just takes up a lot of space!  At the end of each school year we go through their projects they created throughout the year and pick what ones they want to keep to put in their memory box. When I come across a craft that is not only fun for them to make but can be used for more than just their creative outlet it’s a big win! 🙂

These Thumbprint Butterfly Flower Pots are the perfect craft for kids to have fun making but also looks pretty on your kitchen counter all spring and summer long.

Thumbprint Butterfly Flower Pots SUPPLIES:

  • Terra Cotta Pots, whatever size you choose, we used a medium size to be able to hold candy or a small plant
  • Acrylic Craft Paint, I use FolkArt – the colors are so bright and it’s non-toxic (it’s not washable though so protect your clothes)
  • Paint Brush
  • Black Sharpie Marker
  • Candy & Clear Candy bags, if filling with candy

You will be begin by using a Sharpie Marker to draw on the body of the butterfly.  If your child is old enough to draw simple shapes this is a step they can do! We drew multiple butterfly bodies around our terra cotta pot.  Just keep in mind you will be adding wings to the butterflies so you want to make sure there is enough space between them.

This part is optional but we decided to paint the rim of our terra cotta pots some  pretty summer colors!  You can choose any color you like!  Let the paint dry before continuing on.  Our rims needs a few coats to fully cover them but the paint dries really quickly!

Lastly apply a small amount of paint on the thumb of your child and press down on either side of the butterfly body until you have 4 wings.  You can make the wings all the same color or alternate between colors.

Candy Flower Pot

We decided to fill our flower pots with some candy to deliver as gifts.  They would make a great gift for Mothers Day or for Grandma!  You could also fill these flower pots with a small indoor plant.  Your kids will have a blast making something on their own that they can give and see being displayed.
