Grinch Cookies on Table with Red Hearts

GRINCH COOKIES

Every year I host a fun Grinchmas party with my family.  It’s a night full of gingerbread house making, Christmas games, yummy food, and watching The Grinch.  The version with Jim Carey is our personal favorite, but the newest animated version is just as good! 🙂  Some years we have played volleyball and other years we have added a fun ugly sweater contest, while every year is sometimes a tad different we always have a great time being with each other and eating yummy treats.  These Grinch Cookies are perfect for a festive Grinchmas night.  Whether you have an annual Grinchmas party or just like to watch the movie with your family these cookies are a yummy treat!

grinch cookies cake mix supplies

First you will want to start with a basic cake mix cookie recipe, just like our funfetti cake mix cookies, these are simple and only require a few extra ingredients.

GRINCH COOKIES INGREDIENTS:

  • White or Vanilla Cake Mix
  • Canola Oil
  • Eggs
  • Green Food Coloring
  • Confectioners Sugar
  • Red Candy Melts

mix all ingredients in bowl

MIX YOUR COOKIE DOUGH

Start off by mixing your cake mix with eggs, oil and milk. Disregard the ingredients called for on the back of the box.  Your batter will be on the thick side.

add green food coloring to cookie batter

GRINCH GREEN

Make sure you add a few drops of food coloring to you batter and mix again to get that classic Grinch color.

roll cookie balls in powdered sugar

ROLL IN POWDERED SUGAR

Once you mix all your cookie dough ingredients together you will want to roll your cookies in confectioners/powdered sugar.  This step is optional but just adds a fun snowy look to the cookies.  You can even sprinkle some on top as soon as the cookies come out of the oven.

"paint" on red heart with melted red candy melts

ADD RED HEART

Once your cookies are done baking and have cooled you can “paint” on some red hearts using red candy melts that have been melted.  Let the red chocolate hearts harden before serving, this should only take a few minutes.

  1. I have a question about the Grinch cookies. Can they be made ahead of time and the put into the freezer to be had on another day?

  2. My is very sticky. Is this normal? Almost like slime consistency. I put in fridge for 30 min. It helped firm it a little bit but as soon as I started to roll the dough into balls, it instantly turned gooie again.

    1. Hi Sarah! Unfortunately no! You should actually have quite the opposite problem…the batter is typically thick…maybe a tad “sticky” depending on the cake mix brand but not gooey. Did you only add the ingredients I mentioned in the recipe card above? You don’t want to add any ingredients called for on the back of the box, that would be too much. Other than adding too much I’m not sure what else could have gone wrong.

      1. “Sticky” is okay….gooey like slime is not 🙂 If it’s too sticky you can pop it in the fridge for 30 minutes. Once you place it in the confectioners sugar and roll around it shouldn’t be as sticky.

  3. should I assume I put a.few.drops of green food coloring in the dough before baking?? there is no mention on how you got yours green.

  4. 3 stars
Where is the green food coloring ? It’s not in the recipe directions. You might want to add it to the actually recipe the average baker would be missing that ingredient following the recipe. Very suprised I’m the only one that noticed it. I’m a well seasoned baker. They’re adorable I don’t ever short cut and use a cake mix but these are just to irresistible. Thank you for making the holiday cookie season a little lighter. Merry Christmas 😊

  5. I love Grinch and these cookies are so much fun. Guess what people are getting next year for Christmas in a small baggie? Thanks Cindy
