I was given Ryobi Tools to complete this project and others around my home. All opinions are mine. I only share products I truly love!
I am so excited to show you my fireplace redo! If you follow me on Instagram you have seen some sneak peeks of how it’s been coming along. I am so in love with it. My hubby did an amazing job. We were both a little skeptical of how it would turn out. I am by no means an interior designer and carpentry doesn’t come natural to him, although I think every project he does he blows me away more and more! My dream fireplace started out on a scrap piece of paper ๐
We had a close family friend who is definitely talented in the carpentry field come over and just give us an idea of all the supplies we would need and about how much. You know…the hard stuff ๐ We picked up our supplies a few days later and slowly got started and when I say we I definitely mean-the hubby! ๐
Okay…before I get started on showing you how we did let me just show you the before and after! Isn’t it great!!
I know, what a difference right?! To get started we screwed 2 x4’s into the brick using cement screws so that we could screw the sheet rock to cover the bricks.
We then added some board and batten sheets to the center of the fireplace for some texture . We framed out the mantel and base of the fireplace with plywood. We also made two “pillars” out of plywood as well.
After everything was framed out we hang up the sheetrock.
We were on a very strict budget and couldn’t afford to go out and buy a bunch of trim so yep..we DIY’ed that as well. We cut thin pieces of trim out of our 2 x 4’s and trimmed everything out ๐
Lastly, we went back and forth between painting everything on the fireplace white or adding stain to break up the color a bit..obviously we went with the stain and I couldn’t be happier with our choice. We figured we would stain it first and if we hated it we could paint over it–but we love it!
None of this could have been done without our new Ryobi Tools which were PERFECT for this project and they made everything so much easier!
I love how bright and cheery the fireplace is and it will be so fun to decorate at the change of each season!

Hi Katie;
I’m a little confused about the wood 2 x 4’s around the opening of the fireplace/firebox. Won’t they get hot enough to catch on fire or did you protect the wood and the drywall around those three edges with some sort of fireproof trim?
Thanks,
Robert
Katie says
Hi Robert, We don’t use the fireplace to actually make a fire which is why we went ahead and added the wood. We wouldn’t have done that if we still planned on using it as normal ๐ We may add a gas insert at some point but for now it’s just a focal point.

Thanks Katie, that was my second guess. Nice job and thanks again for the post.

Great inspirational piece. Do you have a wood burning, or gas fireplace? What material did you use and are they fire code approved? My fireplace really needs a face lift, and update. Help!

Hey Katie! Great transformation! I really loved the makeover. Thanks for the inspiration.

Really nice transformation. It looks like you added a raised the hearth-can you tell how that was done? I have a fireplace that I would like to modernize by adding a raised heart, stucco surround, and a higher, rectangular gas firebox. I was told the new firebox would cost 4 grand which is way out oft budget right now.

This is an amazing transformation. It is exactly the inspiration I need for our fireplace project. I want the dated brick to go, but now paint it. I can’t wait to show my husband your beautiful design. We were hoping to cover ours up with wood too.
