I’ve always loved the look of concrete home decor but never knew how to work with real cement in my crafting.  I also didn’t  like how heavy certain home decor pieces were.  With three children under the age of 5, I have to keep my home decor simple. So I decided to head to my local A.C. Moore and bought a few simple supplies to make these bookshelf statement pieces.  A.C.Moore was one of the very first craft stores that came to my area and I remember many weekend trips spent shopping for new craft supplies with my Mom and Grandmother.

SUPPLIES:

  • Wooden blocks, 1 small and 1 large
  • FolkArt Painted Finishes, concrete
  • FolkArt Shortie Brushes
  • Craft Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Painters tape

DIRECTIONS:

Start off by taping off a small section of your wood blocks and paint it in the color you desire.  I chose to do a two color -block look and picked a pretty aqua color and white.

Remove the tape and allow to dry.  Once your two colors are dry, apply another piece of tape on top of your painted section so that the concrete paint doesn’t get on it.

Take your FolkArt shortie brushes and dab on either the light concrete paint or the dark concrete paint until fully covered. I did a little bit of both finishes.

Allow to dry for a few minutes and remove tape.  Touch up any areas that may need it. Allow to dry fully before placing on your bookshelf.  I love the bit of industrial look this gives to my home decor.   If you want the whole wooden block to have the texture look you can apply the concrete finishes first, allow to dry and then paint your color-block lines.

  1. Hi there!

Very cute project, but I have a question: Are the blocks heavy enough to hold books in place? I want to use this in my kitchen for about 5 cookbooks that otherwise live in a cupboard. Would love to display them on my counter, and this project otherwise seems to fit the bill. Thanks in advance.
