Easy Butterfly Cupcakes

It’s been a little while since I have shared a kids treat recipe and these easy butterfly cupcakes are just the perfect and yummy sweet treat that your kids will not only enjoy eating but making too!  The bright icing colors celebrate the warm weather and the rainbow sprinkle covered pretzels just scream happy.  My kids love to bake and play in the kitchen and while I will admit, this easy butterfly cupcake recipe may be a bit messy, it’s something you and your kids or loved ones can do together.

Butterfly Cupcake Ingredients:

  • Cupcakes, you can use your favorite homemade cupcake recipe or use a boxed cake mix
  • Pretzels, make sure they are the mini twists
  • Melted White Candy Melts
  • White Sixlet candies, or something similar in size
  • Sprinkles, I used the nonparelis kind
  • Colored icing, in your desired colors

You can find all the ingredients you need in your local craft store. I actually was able to find everything I needed at my local Walmart.

How to make Butterfly Cupcakes:

I wanted to add another pop of color to the butterflies so I decided to coat the pretzels in white chocolate and colorful sprinkles.  Don’t have patience for sprinkles?  You can always dip your pretzels in different color candy melts instead.  Or you can skip coloring the pretzels altogether.

Once you dip your pretzels in the melted candy melts you will want to dip them in the sprinkles right away.  Once the pretzels are fully covered place them on a Silpat or a baking sheet lined with wax paper and allow the chocolate to set.  I like to place them in the refrigerator to speed up the process. This should only take a few minutes.

Sprinkle Pretzels added to icing

Once you pipe on your icing on the cupcakes you can start assembling your butterflies.  I like to start with the pretzel wings.  You will want to put them in at a slight angle and push them into the icing so they stay in place. Then you can add three white sixlets to make the butterfly’s body.

Have fun changing the colors to your kids favorites!  I think white icing with a pink or blue butterfly body will be fun too!  The color combinations are endless!
