My middle child, Carter, is BIG into all things tractors, constructions vehicles and all things boy. For his 3rd birthday party in January I just knew we had to create a cake that was centered around construction vehicles.  I have seen construction cakes floating around on Pinterest for a while now and decided it would be perfect for his party.  My mom is the designated birthday cake maker, not only do her cakes look great they taste delicious as well!  She used our favorite chocolate cake recipe for the base of this cake and it was as yummy as always!

This cake really is so easy to make.  It’s just a matter of creating little scenes appropriate with the construction vehicles. The construction vehicles make the perfect little gift for the birthday boy after the cake has been cut.

To create the look of dirt we put some Oreo’s in a food processor and mixed until finely crumbled. Some of the candies that we used were: Kit Kats, Whoppers, Mini M&M’s, Ferrero Roche. We also used a few pretzels rods as logs. The possibilities are endless.

My boys loved “playing” with the cake and my little guy was more upset when we needed to cut the cake than anything 🙂

  2. Hi Katie,
I would love to make this cake for my son Jasper. It’s his 4th birthday.
I was wondering what kind of frosting did you use to cover the cake? And how much batter do I need to make the size of cake in your photo?
    Thanks a lot!
    Best regards,

  3. Hi Katie, this cake looks amazing and I plan on making it for my son’s 4th birthday this weekend! Did you just use 1 x the quantity in the cake mixture recipe. ie. you ended up with two 9 inch square cakes laid side by side as a single layer? Thank you.

    1. Hi Catherine! We actually made the cake recipe in a 9 x 13 inch pan 🙂 I would bake it at the same temperature for about 30 to 40 minutes…but start checking it at around 27 minutes as baking times can vary 🙂 You just want the clean toothpick out of the center test.
