How To Make Moon Craft VIDEO

Materials Needed for Your Moon Craft

I love the craft supplies for this activity, they are so fun and I always grab fun glittery stars. Find whatever speaks to you at the store and add it to your galaxy!

Here is what you will need:

  • Black cardstock paper, (8×11)
  • White cardstock (any size, this is what you will cut the moon out of)
  • Foam glitter stars (I used a mix of silver and gold stars in a variety of sizes)
  • White paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Metallic Silver Paint
  • Cotton Balls
  • Clothespin
  • White glue if your foam stars aren’t peel and stick stars

Find all of these materials at your local craft store, Walmart supercenters craft section, and even the Dollar Tree. I’m sure you can find them online as well!

Completing the Easy Moon Craft

Just a note before getting started: you will be flicking white paint at your surface as one of the last steps. I recommend doing this activity outside or on a surface that is covered or protected.

  1. Clip a clothespin to the top of a cotton ball.
  2. Dip the cotton ball in silver paint and stamp your paint on a white piece of cardstock in a rough circle shape. It’s okay if some white peeks through as that’s how the moon looks.
  3. Once the paint is dry, cut the painted area in a circle shape.
  4. Add a touch of water to your white paint on a paper plate or paint dish. Dip a paint brush in it. While holding the paint-loaded brush above the black paper tap it with another paintbrush to scatter the paint onto the black paper. Do this until you get a galaxy-looking sky.
  5. Once the paint is all dry, add your moon and stars.

If the scene you created doesn’t look shiny enough, you can always add a sprinkle or two of silver glitter to make it shimmer like the night sky. Let the crafts dry completely before displaying them anywhere so the paint doesn’t drip and ruin the moon. These look so cool hung up all over the room

When to Use This Fun Moon Craft

This craft is a great way to learn about the different phases of the moon. Instead of creating a full circle, make several crafts, each with a different phase displayed on it. Hang them around the room to show kids how the moon’s surface changes throughout the cycle. I know many first grade and even second grade classes learn about the moon, so it’s a great classroom tool to add to a lesson plan.

Kids will love using this craft as a school project. If they are learning about the moon and are required to make their own moon activity, have them do this craft at home. It’s not only fun but super easy for older kids to do all on their own!

Other Fun Ideas for This Simple Moon Craft

Maybe you’re talking about the first moon landing and Neil Armstrong! Tell kids all about it and then complete this activity together as a fun way to wrap up the lesson. They will love learning about the first step taken on the moon and then making their own moon to share!

Read books about the moon to get kids excited about the craft, too! We love Goodnight Moon as well as tons of other moon books, like I Am The Moon, and Burying the Moon! Reading a good story before completing a craft is always a great idea. It makes the full experience last longer and they get excited to make their own craft.

Your finished craft makes an amazing bulletin board display in the classroom or in the home. The kids will love gazing at their moon’s surface after creating it and sharing it with others.
