Flannel Jammie Shorts

We have had some really warm/hot summer like days lately....bring on the shorts and tank tops!  I quickly realized that those one piece zipper jammies are just too hot for my baby boy to be wearing at night! I found some cute flannel fabric at Joanns a few months back for 1/2 off and stocked up on a few "boyish" patterns!  These shorts are perfect for summer nights.  They allow him to be cool, but are still soft and comfy! I don't know about you but I might make myself a few pair....have you seen all the pretty designs flannel comes in now? A girl can go crazy trying to pick a few!

Materials:
Flannel or non stretchy fabric
(This tutorial is made using a type of fabric that is NON stretchy.
If you try to make this with a knit it will be too big!)
Elastic
Sewing Machine

First take a pair of shorts that fit your child now.  Turn them right side out and cut out four pieces.  2 front and 2 back. ( fold your fabric so you cut two pieces out at a time---makes things go faster!)

Make sure when you cut around your "pattern" shorts that you cut at least 1/4 inch away for a seam allowance, enough room for a casing for the elastic and enough space for a small heam at the bottom.

Make sure you cut the top part of your shorts wide enough.  If you measure the width of the "pattern" shorts with the elastic in it already the shorts will be way to small once all sewn together!
A GOOD TIP: While your "pattern" shorts are folded....PULL the elastic with both hands as far out as you can go....if your unsewn piece is that width, its perfect!

Take your two front pieces and place RIGHT sides together. Serge or zig zag stitch from the top of the two pieces down to the curve and then stop. Do this step to the front pieces and back pieces.

Now lay your front piece and back piece RIGHT sides together.

Match the two crotch pieces to form a wide "V" shape and serge or zig ziag stitch.
( Since flannel doesnt fray you could even sew the whole project with a straight stitch)

Optional: You can now serge or zig zag stitch your two leg holes and the top of your shorts for a more finished look.

Fold your side pieces together.

Yes in this picture below I had forgotten that I wanted to serge the leg holes and top of the shorts BEFORE I sewed the sides together, so It was a little more tricky doing it after....so word of advice do it before of you have to stop and move your fabric making sure you aren't sewing through two layers of fabric....:)

Fold your leg holes over a 1/2 inch and sew.

Cut the size elastic you need.  To determine the needed size just wrap a piece around your childs waist and add one inch for overlap. Sew your elastic together to create a large loop

Wrap your elastic around your shorts.  Fold your fabric over your elastic to make a casing.  Make sure you don't sew through your elastic.

Continue to pull on elastic if needed. There are a couple of different ways to sew in elastic...if this seems to difficult go ahead and try a different way!  I have used various ways too.

Felt Flower Napkin Ring

I just love EVERYTHING about the summer season!  I love the bright colors, the smell of the bbq, soaking in the pool and hosting fun get togethers!  An inexpensive ways to dress up a table for a party is by using napkin rings. I love how you can personalize a table for any season/holiday!  Summer is all about the green grass and beautiful flowers, so why not bring some of that color in your own home!

Materials:
Felt
Elastic
Hot glue gun

Cut out 4 larger size circles of felt and 4 smaller circles of a contrasting color felt.

Take your first circle and fold in half.  Then fold in half again.  You will have a small petal.

Do this to all your contrasting color felt pieces too.

Cut out a smaller circle shaped piece of felt and begin glueing your petals down.  When adding your contrasting color petals, make sure you stagger them with the larger petals

Cut a 4 inch piece of elastic and hot glue to the back of petals creating a loop.
Cut a small circle and cover the elastic.
