Onesie Dress

I don't know about you, but nothing brings a bigger smile to my face than making things for babies.
I just love the itty bittyness of it!

Here are some fun things I have made for my son Jacob so far
(check out my {Tutorials } for the links to these projects)

We don't know what gender this baby is yet....only a week and a half left and we will know!  It's not a secret though that I would love to have a little girl ( Of course the MOST IMPORTANT thing is that the baby is healthy---just wanted to make that crystal clear) My hubby and I have always wanted at least 3 children and would love to have at least one of each....obviously again we will be just as thrilled to have another little boy enter this crazy family :)

Until I find out what I am having, I have been busy making a few girly things AND a few boy things.  I know a few pregnant women that are having girls if we are having another little monster boy :)  So my work isn't going to waste for sure...but I really have so much fun making things for babies!

Do you know of a little girly girl you could make a dress for?  Maybe for your own daughter or the daughter of a friend?

Decide where you want your patterned fabric to start. I chose right underneath the arm pits.  My decision being made soley on the fact that their was a mysterious stain on the onesie...I don't even have a daughter, so how a stain got there I do not know! :)  I have seen dresses cut down below the belly button too and all look super cute!

Measure the circumference of the onesie and add 10 inches.  Decide how long you want the dress to be....to the babies ankle or right below the knee.  Cut out the amount needed.

Serge or zig zag stitch both long edges.

Fold your fabric in half right sides together and serge the two short ends together.
You will have a tube when finished. ( Soo sorry for the horribly blurry picture)

Create a hem at the bottom of your tube.  Fold up 1 inch and sew with a straight stitch.

Cut your onesie where desired.

Insert your onesie into your fabric tube.  Make sure right sides are together.  The raw edge of your onesie should meet with the NON Hemmed edge of your fabric tube.

Pin in place. You will need to stagger your pins.  Place a pin on both sides of the dress and then in the middle of the front and back of the dress.  You will have gaps.

As you are sewing, you will need to pull your onesie to match the dress.  Your onesie will act as an elastic and pull it all together.  See the pictures below if I am confusing you :)

See how it gaps?  Pull your elastic so both materials lay flat together and then sew to the first pin and repeat till your finished.

Easy right?

If you feel as though the dress is too full or has too much room in the sides, just turn inside out and sew a wider side seam until its just perfect!

  1. So pretty! I love making these - they are so easy and quick. I have made them for babies using the onesie and not cutting the bottom off, just sew the skirt on and tada! instant dress :) Here is one I made for my best friend's new baby this spring http://adventuresofdandv.blogspot.com/2012/05/adventures-in-sewing-kate-mae-dress.html
