I love homemade spaghetti sauce and I have a great recipe from my Mom that I make every few months. I like to buy the big cans at Sams Club and freeze it for a quick fix meal. I decided to reuse the cans. I washed them out and let them air dry. There are so many different routes you can go with these. You can spray paint them, you can wrap scrapbooking paper around them, wrap jute around them, or do what I did and use fabric. I also made a small marker holder using a small can that holds either fruit or veggies. This is FINALLY my last project for my craft room and I will hopefully show you pictures of it tomorrow.
Materials:
Cans
Fabric
Modgepodge
Embellishments of your choice
Take the paper off of your cans and wash them out. Using a tape measure, measure around your can to decide how long you need your fabric to be. Measure the height of your can too. My can was about 20 inches all the way around.
Paint a layer of modge podge on your can and place your fabric on top. Make sure to smooth your fabric down as you go.
Once your fabric is smooth, apply a thin layer of modge podge on top of your fabric.
( Don't worry...it dries clear! )
After your fabric is dry, apply a contrasting band strip. You can use modge podge again or use small amount of hot glue to hold the strip in place.
Pinch your two end pieces together and hot glue in place.
Hot glue your buttons on.
On two of the other cans, I just added a small yellow ribbon. My craft room is simple...which I love!
Here is the marker can I made using a small can. I did the same process with the fabric. I also added some jute to the top and bottom of the can
Happy Crafting!!

I recently decorated cans for my daughter's birthday party, but had to add an extra step to cover up the tomato stains inside the can. You can learn more here http://www.shybydesign.com/2012/05/04/dr-seuss-party-part-4-invitations-extra-details/
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative! Love it. I started keeping my mom's coffee mate creamer bottles...How would you recommend covering them with fabric? I thought of maybe scrap book paper with mod podge, but hmmm... They have that weird shape.
ReplyDeleteoh, & do you have a Twitter? I often want to ask your questions and I was just wondering.. a quick way to connect. :)
ReplyDeleteThose are lovely containers.
ReplyDeleteYou really transformed a simple can into art! And, I live that they are useful. Can 't wait to see your craft room, love the colors you chose!
